Leukotrienes Blockers

There currently are two main types of treatment for leukotrienes.  If you want to understand AERD you should try to learn more about leukotrienes.  The two ways to treat this aspect of AERD are to either block the action of the leukotrienes or to prevent their formation.  The main treatments in the United States to block the action of leukotrienes are with either montelukast (Singulair) or zafirlukast (Accolate).  These are similar medications and work by preventing the already formed leukotrienes from getting to their receptor and triggering inflammation.  They have been proven to be helpful in AERD.  The do not have a significant amount of side effects

The second treatment option is a medication known as zileuton (Zyflo CR).  This medication works by preventing the formation of leukotrienes in the first place. It also has been shown to be safe and helpful in AERD  One of the limiting factors of this medication right now in the United States is that it can be costly and insurance coverage is inconsistent.  For many patients that have not done well on other treatments, this can be a good one to try.  It can cause patients to have abnormal liver tests, so your doctor may order some blood tests to monitor while you are taking it.
